DRENCH ME WITH LIGHT
Dear eyes
keep seeing.
Drench me with
light
lest I forget its
blessing
People my darkness
with faces that I
love.
Let my dog’s brown gaze
stay with me
always.
I’ll look my fill
at streets and lanes
and hedgerows
and all the common things
of everyday,
but stop
who is this calm
controlled impostor
planning her course
with dignity and phlegm?
Alas, no stoic
I.
If darkness be my
fate
and all the moving
pageant of this
world
is blotted out,
my raging impotence
will know no bounds.
So God, bestir Thyself,
I’ll need Thee.
